Minnesota is a midwestern U.S. state bordering Canada and Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes. The state contains more than 10,000 other lakes, including Lake Itasca, the Mississippi River’s primary source. The “Twin Cities” of Minneapolis and state capital Saint Paul are dense with cultural landmarks like the Science Museum of Minnesota and the Walker Art Center, a modern art museum.

Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd U.S. state on May 11, 1858, created from the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory. The state is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". Its official motto is L'Étoile du Nord, French for "The Star of the North").

Minnesota is the 12th largest in area and the 22nd most populous of the U.S. states. Nearly 55% of its residents live in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area (known as the "Twin Cities"), the state's main hub of transportation, business, industry, education, arts, and government. Minnesota offers an endless array of things to do on vacation. Outdoor pursuits include fishing and boating, great golf, and some of the country’s best bike trails. There are excellent museums of all types, and options for live theater abound. Numerous wineries, breweries and distilleries are open for tours and tastings. And shopping is always nearby, including Mall of America, the state’s most-visited attraction.

Minnesota has a humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification Dfb) with warm and icy winters in northern two-thirds of the state. The remaining portion in the south falls under the hot-summer subtype (Köppen Dfa) with hot summers and cold winters. Minnesota lies in the Upper Midwest region of the United States. The state's borders touch Lake Superior in the northeast, Wisconsin in the east, Iowa in the south, South Dakota in the southwest, North Dakota in the west, and the Canadian Provinces of Manitoba and Ontario in the north. The latitudes and proximity to Lake Superior are major factors that influence the climate.
